Do you Know?

It was the boat residing in the community of Hanji that started building houseboats for English visitors.  Because they were not permitted to own land in the province. Close to the end of the 19th century, the mainly European immigrants were flooding into the valley and wanted a place to live for their long holidays.  As it was not easy to buy a piece of land and build a house in Kashmir. Pandit Naraindas gets the credit for the birth of houseboats in Kashmir. Pandit Naraindas had a shop around 1885, which used to cater to the foreigners’ needs.

He had to transfer his remaining goods to a doonga, a small boat used by hanjis for residential purposes, and moored it at a suitable site. This was the first float on the houseboat. Naraindas sold his ship to a European, and soon became a shipbuilder. The first houseboat he designed and operated called Princess of Kashmir. Staying at a Srinagar houseboat today is a rare and must-do experience. The valley tour remains unfinished without having stayed in a houseboat.
