Located 12 km from Cherrapunjee in the East Khasi Hills district, Kynrem Falls is a three-tiered waterfall covering a vertical distance of 305 m. The base of the falls passes through the motor road that goes all the way to Bangladesh and a small bridge provides travel over this waterfall for vehicles and citizens. The fall splits into two distinct streams or rivulets with each of them gaining momentum by mixing while flowing down the last leg of the third stage.

In Meghalaya, Kynrem Fall is a seasonal waterfall. With abundant rainfall in the area, it is best experienced during the monsoon. The roar of the waterfall along with the buzzing noise of countless cicadas generates otherworldly charm. Kynrem Falls deserves a special mention among the different waterfalls in Meghalaya. These Falls are a three-tiered waterfall that falls from a height of 1001 ft.

The origins of this fall come from the park of Thangkharang. It is the seventh highest waterfall in India, and this waterfall is best enjoyed during the monsoons because of its seasonal nature. The roaring din of the cascading drops reflects a healthy rivalry for this fall’s noisy cicadas all over the neighborhood.

According to our Assamese guide, several other parallel plumes of cascading water during the monsoon would have decorated the falls. But even though the key falls still took place while we were there, I think maybe another month or two when the Kynrem Falls will go completely dry or trickle disappointingly before the next year’s monsoon will bring in a fresh batch of moisture.

Best Time to Visit Kynrem Falls

The lifetime of the waterfall is very slow as it relies primarily on rainfall to feed it with water. Monsoons are the best time to visit Nohsngithiang Falls in that sense, as one can see it flowing with its full strength, brimming with water and life. As the waterfall could only dry up to be a tiny strand and a mere shadow of itself, the winters and summers might be rather disappointing.
